I just love the way local politicians will say anything
to get elected
Tuesday, April 12, 2005
Dear Editor,
I just love the way local politicians will say anything
to get elected. Last year the Democrats running in the
North Smithfield election distributed a 'report card'
flyer to most homes in town. The flyer stated, "No
tax breaks for retail businesses, thus lessening the
homeowner's tax burden." It also stated, "Will
enact Homestead Exemption. Tax saving of $400-$800 for
residents." Whose names were on that flyer? Bob
Lowe, Melissa Flaherty, and David Lovett; ironically
the same people who are currently negotiating a tax
treaty with mega mall developer Brian Bucci. Oh, and
what ever happened to the Homestead Exemption? I guess
it got lost in the general enthusiasm of the tax break
for big box retail stores that earn billions in sales
revenue every year. And giving big boxes like Home Depot
a tax break is like giving Bill Gates and Microsoft
a tax break. There isn't a shred of logic to the theory.
Another Dowling Village daydream.
Unfortunately, individuals will 'promise' whatever
they have to in order to get elected, but when it comes
time to live up to those promises then dollars and politics
hold the higher hand and the taxpayer is left to spin
in the wind. I personally expected much, much more from
the Democratic Team. They talked (and printed) a good
sales pitch before elections but they now have a Failing
'report card'.
Sincerely,
William Frye
